Do you ever ask yourself how luscious it would be to be free of guilt and worry? Guilt and worry are
probably the two biggest causes of distress in our culture. Their like two deadbeat relatives that you can't get rid of and are hard to ignore. I hate to give these guys any press but I think their foibles need to be brought out into the light of day.
I suppose it is pretty obvious that W&G are useless emotions. Both worry and guilt rob us of our present precious moments. Most people are feeling guilty about something that already happened that they cannot change. Let's face it, the past is dead and there is absolutely nothing you can do to change it. How can we undo something that has already taken place? We can look at it and learn from it, pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and move on. Learning from our mistakes is a healthy and necessary part of life. in the case of worry, we are obsessing about some future event that has not happened and probably never will. But we worry at the expense of the present moment.
Unfortunately, I have found that instead of letting go, we feel the need to punish ourselves. Subconsciously, there is a tendency to limit ourselves due to guilt piled on top of guilt. These are self-imposed limitations that we are hardly aware of. Guilt has us saying things like: "I only deserve this" or "I can only have that." I think there is this idea in our culture that if one doesn't feel guilt or worry all the time that one is somehow a bad person. Yet guilt is such a huge waste of emotional energy. And it prevents us from taking action in the now as a result of behaving in a certain way in the past. Not only does it immobilize us but it actually intensifies the chances that we will repeat the unwanted behavior.
How can we neutralize worry and guilt? Self-forgiveness is the key. However, this is easier said than done. Hypnosis can help release the chains that are holding you back.
I'll see you this time next week.
